Chapter Fourteen

The rest of the day went absolutely nothing as I’d expected. Given what my life as a Havener was like, I should have seen it coming.

After Everleigh’s sudden arrival at Gawama Mama, I’d thought she and I would discuss candidates to disengage Big D’s magic from my mom until Quade came back with Aunt Jowelle. Our discussion would be pleasant, and by the end of it, Everleigh and I’d be best buds.

Then Quade and I would enjoy a lovely evening to ourselves absconded off in one of the house’s hangout rooms, perusing the town registry, just as we had when we’d worked to unhook his mother’s magic from the barrier spell. There would be lots of flirtatious and witty banter, which would amount to foreplay I’d get to cash in on later, once we finally got some privacy. I’d get to kick my feet up and enjoy Quade’s company while I plotted to save the day, earning a gold star for my amazing detective work. I’d be a comedic genius, eliciting that gorgeous smile of his that made my insides warm.

Oh, how very wrong I’d been…

Quade returned with Aunt Jowelle all right, but she hadn’t calmed down one bit. Considering I’d pictured him in skeazy leather pants, with roving eyes and bling peeking out from his chest hair—maybe a handlebar mustache, and an effusive amount of eau de pervy splashed all over him—I couldn’t help but enjoy the heck out of his genuine smile and sunshiny demeanor. Danny could’ve hung out with Quade and me, sharing some of our Beebee’s Brew, and I would’ve been just fine.

But Danny was just the beginning of Aunt Jo’s rodent hunting team. Since Haveners believed wholeheartedly in karma, even if they didn’t assign it that name, Aunt Jowelle wouldn’t be attempting to kill Humphrey or any of his girlfriends. She’d be working to convince him he was better off finding a new home, preferably one out in the forest where he wouldn’t mar the family fine china, and leaving Quade and I to get hot and heavy without a secret audience.

At Aunt Jowelle’s request, Poppy Pleace arrived in her own car to make sure her spell took hold. Poppy was a pleasant enough witch who, with her short stature and prominent front teeth, reminded me of a rodent herself. She led three other witches, in their early twenties and
